The Silent Treatment (A song about c, v, c, silent e)
Cards on the table, I would never have thought to write this song all by myself. I teach music. I do not think about phonics rules much. I think about phonetics…how to shape your mouth so that our music blends together and sounds great…and blah blah blah…you don’t care. Point being I don’t think about phonics that much.
I am talking to my friend, (I love you Christie) and asking about skills she teaches in her classroom. She says, “consonant, vowel, consonant, silent e”. I say, “What?” She repeats and I run with it.
Why not turn this into something kids can relate to? Why not have them see this put to use in an out of the box way?
Hmmm? What do kids do everyday, more than once, anytime they leave the classroom? They stand in line quietly. We hope:) Hahahaha…sigh.
So this phonics, story song (The Silent Treatment) is about standing in line and wow can they relate! And…well…I don’t know about you but I take any chance I get to go over a rule or procedure in a new way.
“The Silent Treatment” (Get it here)lists combinations of consonant, vowel, consonant, silent e without saying the actual words so it lends itself to discussion on which words the song used and which words it could have used instead.
You can even pass out letters and let them line up to make words and see if the “e” talks or not.
It also sings consonant, vowel, consonant, silent e over and over to get the formula stuck in their head.
I have used it with my Kindergarteners. We even acted it out and used it as part of our graduation ceremony. They loved it!
Check out the song here and let me know how you use it.
